How to Deadhead Geraniums

Good morning all can anyone advise me how to deadhead my geraniums please do I cut the stem right off or just the head of flower thankyou

Hi @calamatous

Thanks for asking about how to deadhead Geraniums. I'm going to assume you mean hardy Geraniums and not Palagoniums (which are the tender annual often seen in Meditteranean gardens)

The best way to deadhead hardy Geraniums is with a simple pair of kitchen scissors. Once the plant has started to go over, petals falling off, give it a rough haircut. Take off 1/4 of the plant in the early morning or evening. This will promote a second flush of flowers. For deadheading roses and other plants, follow my video guide below, which involves cutting back to the next lateral or shoot. You don't need to do this with these Geraniums as they are fast-growing and very floriferous!
