Lavender growing advice in the UK when it doesn't flower

Hi Lee, I hope you are well. I follow you on Facebook, love your creativity, very inspiring. Can I ask about my lavender. I've planted some up in pots at beginning of summer but they haven't flowered. Got bigger but that's all. Can you tell me why that is. Thanks so much Lorraine

    Hi Lorraine,

Thanks so much for the kind words about my gardening social media accounts. I love sharing my gardening tips and knowledge to help new gardeners. For visitors that haven't seen my accounts, you can find my Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter below.

As for your lavender they can take a season or town to get established. Especially if you've planted them as young plug plants or P9s (P9 refers to the pot size in that case 9cm wide).

The key with lavender is to give them the ideal conditions where they would be found natively. Ie in the hot warm dry Mediterranean. So if you're growing lavender in the UK you need to mirror these conditions, either via planting them in warm sunny free draining spots or using containers to be able to mirror these conditions. ie move the pots into your sunniest spots.

Lavender hates wet roots and claggy soil. They never thrive and most likely die after a few years. Planting in raised beds like below can be a good way to get around poor or clay-like soil conditions to grow lavender.

Also pruning lavender is essential each year. You need to cut back 1.3 of the fresh green growth of that year. Be careful never to cut back to the old brown woody material as they won't regenerate from this.

That said they are really easy plants to look after and I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time growing their aromatic beauties!

Good luck with your growing Lorraine!
