So towards the end of the Summer, just after the heatwave we had a couple of dry patches on the lawn. Then as the weather started to get wet we constantly had birds nipping away at the lawn and its now totally wrecked. The local garden center suggested they are getting worms but I wondered what advice people could give so I can restore it.. do I need to put sulphate down before raking and seeding in early spring? Any advice is appreciated.

Hello Foxynal, at the top of the web page click on the search icon, the magnifying glass, type in lawn care and it will take you to a video on turf and lawns/seeding by Lee which will help you out.
If you only have a couple of small patches like those in your picture, I would just give them a bit of a tidy up, remove the old brown thatch down to soil level, and just give it a while prior to a bit of raking over and re-seeding, if it’s your complete lawn, check out Lee’s video on scarifying / lawn preparation, should you wish to go for a complete re-seed think about how you wish to use and or see your lawn, example, like a bowling green, strong grass that will put up with heavy footfall kids playing football?

It looks as if your lawn has been scorched and hasn't quite recovered. The best thing to do is follow Bob's advice above and oversees these areas, maybe using some canes and string to scare the birds off - or simply putting up a bird feeder elsewhere in the garden whilst the seed germinates!
