    Planting with poppy

I'm planning ahead for spring planting.

I have a sunny perennial bed that's packed with sun-loving flowers. In there, I have a lovely poppy (Papaver 'Brilliant') that puts on a gorgeous, though short-lived display. It's backed by a Diervilla 'Nighglow' and tall Achillea, flanked by an Echinacea (moving into the center of the bed) and a couple of Artemisia (at one edge of the bed), and has a spreading Stachys at the front of the bed. After the poppy dies back, there's sort of a blank space between the lambs' ears and the Diervilla. There's nothing to fill the mid-height range after the poppy dies back. Any suggestions for a plant to fill that space? Also, once selected, should I plant it in front of the poppy?

Consider adding a medium sized plant like salvia or coreopsis to fill the gap. Planting it in front of the poppy could create a balanced look.
