To lift or not to lift plants when moving home. How to relocate them!

In the next couple of months, we are going to be moving house. We don't yet know where to. I currently have a small courtyard garden with lots of pots and wooden planters. Alongside these, we have two small borders and I would like to bring some of the plants with us. The question I have is, is it ok for the plants to be dug up at this time of year ( their roots wrapped in a bin liner during transit)?. I have three different fuchsia bushes.... Two are about 18 - 24 inches in height. One has leaves on already, one hasn't, as it's a late flowering one. The third is Tom Thumb, has a few new leaves and is less than 12 inches in height. Then I have a Spirea Golden Princess about 24 inches in height and already full of new growth and lastly, a Carex Evergold. I've grown these on from being very tiny plants and want them to move with us, but is it ok for me to do so? Thanks for any advice.

    Hi @my-tiny-garden

The quick answer is yes you can lift and move these. However, I wouldn't use the bin bag method. That's because they're likely to get torn during transit, need more watering and suffer from damage.

I'd lift them early one morning or late in the evening and pot them on into large pots. Take as much soil as you can with the root ball and then firm into the pot well. Watering the plants thoroughly.

That way once you've moved you're not in a mad rush to slap them in anywhere, you can take your time in your new garden.

    Hope that helps!

    Happy moving!

Thanks for your advice Lee. It makes perfect sense to dig them up and put them into pots ready for moving. I didn't think of that! 🤦 If there are no borders in the new garden, then at least they're already in pots ready to put onto gravel/pavers. 👍
